The Country Club of Waterbury has long been recognized as an outstanding and challenging layout. Since the Ross design began play in 1928, the Club has played host to numerous outside championship events. In 1938, the USGA offered Waterbury the opportunity to host the following year's National Women's Amateur Golf Championship. The Green Committee, however, concluded "We do not feel we should take on this tournament unless we can be absolutely certain of doing a complete, 100% A-1 job. The lack of space would result in more criticism than could be offset by the favorable features."
The Connecticut State Amateur Championships have been decided on this course 9 times. The course has also hosted a range of state and regional qualifiers. A partial list of events appears below.
