The Waterbury Golf Club, then the Waterbury Golf Association, were the predecessors of this Club. On October 30, 1906, a group of seven gentlemen met and voted to incorporate as the Country Club of Waterubury, Inc. In an effort to raise the estimated $30-$50,000 needed to establish the club and related facilities, a first list of 22 prospective members was drawn up — Chase, Elton, Fulton, Platt, Sperry, Goss, Kingsbury, Whittemore, and Bronson, among others.
Within a few weeks, two men had stepped forward and offered to put up the $10,000 needed to purchase nearly 200 acres at the extreme western end of Waterbury. The names of these two individuals are familiar to many in the Waterbury area — Nathanial Bronson and W.B. Merriman — and the property located along Bradleyville Road is now home to our club on what is now called Oronoke Road.
Historical research about the early founders of this Club is ongoing, but a preliminary biographical sketch has been completed for Bucky Merriman, son of founder W.B. Merriman.
Please check this section in the future for updates and additional research.
