The photograph below is courtesy of the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper and was shot by Waterbury sportswriter Joe Palladino.

The image is of a colorized pane of glass from the original Poland Springs Resort in Poland Springs, Maine.  Arthur Fenn designed the course and is "the dapper chap" visible just to the right of his playing partner, early international golf star Harry Vardon, who prepares to tee off for the eager crowd.

The 19th century resort hotel burned to the ground, but this pane of glass managed to survive — preserving a spectacular image of early American golf.
